The technology leverages the optical properties of liquid crystals: a liquid crystal polymer mixture is sandwiched between two transparent conductive films. Without an electric field, the polymer molecules are randomly arranged, making the film opaque; when powered, an electromagnetic field aligns the molecules uniformly, achieving a transparent state.
